Alfred Carslake

Music Scholar

2019

In 2015 I started my bachelor studies of Music Performance on Trumpet at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, under the tutelage of Leanne Sullivan. I will be graduating this year with my final recital.

Since 2015 I have been a casual performer with both the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Opera Australia Orchestra. I work regularly with the Metropolitan Orchestra of Sydney, and have worked with Sydney Brass and Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra. In addition to working with big organisations, I am an active member of smaller and growing ensembles. I am Principal Trumpet of the chamber orchestra Ensemble Apex, and am a founding member of Wayward Bras.

For the last 5 years I have been a member of the Sydney Youth Orchestra as associate and principal trumpet, and in 2018-2019 the Australian Youth Orchestra including their 2019 international tour to Europe and China

In addition to my performance experiences, I am active as a teacher and director. I am currently the trumpet tutor at Fort Street High School in Sydney, which holds one of the most developed music programs in the country. I have a growing studio here, and have been involved as a conductor/director at their music camps for the last two years.

Teaching for me is also an important aspect of being a professional musician, as it is imperative to the future of music culture in Australia to pass on knowledge to the younger generations.

My trip with the BBM Global Industry Scholarship will take part in Germany. Europe has been the heart and centre of western art music for centuries, and music is much more embedded in European life and society. Germany has traditionally been, and is currently at, the forefront of this cultural movement. There are many options for high calibre tertiary education in music in Europe; more schools and more teachers to choose from, and I believe that Germany offers the best trumpet teachers in the world.
