Meet our awardees: 2017 Agricultural Awardee Dayna Grey
Meet Dayna Grey, one of our 2017 Awardees for Agriculture who will be travelling overseas later this year.
How did you get interested in agriculture?
I didn’t always know I wanted to go into agriculture for a career, I initially looked at other options including physiotherapy. But I am from a farm so agriculture is in my blood, and after attending a career fair I realised all the different interesting options available in agriculture and decided to pursue it. I received a scholarship and now attend Marcus Oldham College, which was always top of my list to study at after I decided to follow a career in agriculture.
Where do you see the future of agriculture?
Agriculture is changing, and along with it the perception that it is not for young people. There is so much technology development and innovation happening that it’s a really interesting area for young people to get involved with. The R&D investment in agriculture is huge, and it’s up to young people to take advantage of this and be part of the development.
What courses and professional qualifications did you do?
I’m currently at Marcus Oldham College studying an Associate Degree of Agribusiness, and last year I completed my diploma of agribusiness. I also did six months of agronomy work to learn more about the industry – I think it’s really important for young people to go out and experience different aspects of agriculture as much and as soon as possible.
How did you hear about BBM Youth Support?
Marcus Oldham College shared the opportunity and I jumped at the chance as I’ve always wanted to experience different agricultural practices overseas.
What advice do you have for anyone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Take every opportunity that’s thrown at you, don’t say ‘no’ say ‘maybe’ and the figure it out. Take a leap out of your comfort zone and always be up for meeting new people and making new connections – you never know where it could take you.
