Tom Loane
Agriculture Scholar
2019/21
“I believe that my purpose as a professional is to learn and share knowledge of growing healthy, nutrient-dense food and producing it in a way that regenerates the land. I hope to influence others to farm in a similar way so that the earth can re-establish itself with thriving ecosystems.”
Tom Loane is one of our 2021 BBM Australian Industry Scholars. In 2019 he was awarded a BBM Global Industry Scholarship in agriculture, but when COVID shut down all international travel, we took the opportunity to offer him a chance to pursue professional and personal development here in Australia.
“I have a specific interest in beef cattle genetics and the influence genetics have on modern beef cattle production. Through meeting various industry leaders in Australia, I look forward to having the opportunity to improve my interpersonal skills, particularly my communication skills, and learning from their wealth of knowledge.”
“I aim to gain more experience on farms and learn about the advances in genetics, animal handling and management. Next, I plan to improve my people management and communication skills. These will aid me in my future senior leadership endeavours. My long-term goal is to own and operate my own beef enterprise. I aim to implement all the skills and knowledge that I’ve gained into my own business to ensure its success and longevity.”
We’ve asked all our scholars to take every step to become practical, holistic leaders of the future who are aligned to the United National Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), supporting our vision of a sustainable, significant Australia.
“I believe my purpose and impact align with the entire UNSDG framework as it focuses on sustainability, health and well-being. However, particularly Sustainable Development Goals # 3 – Good Health and Well-Being and #12 – Responsible Consumption.”
“The experiences I undertake will assist me in running a farm more sustainably through grazing principles, aligning with my responsible consumption and climate actions goals. These important skills also ensure farms can be more profitable. This is essential in all businesses but even more so for sustainable businesses, as they can sometimes be scrutinised for not being profitable in today’s current ‘high yield at all costs’ market setting.”
We look forward to supporting purpose-driven industry leaders like Tom in their journey towards guiding agriculture into the future.
“All these new techniques and learning opportunities within Australia help me in achieving my purpose and impact by greatly assisting my personal and professional development – In particular farm and business management and leadership skills.”
“Using knowledge from my own life experiences I plan to also one day teach others the things I have learnt so they can run a successful, sustainable business.”
